If you've followed me for a while, you know I've always been open about my wellness journey. What you may not know is that I've struggled with my weight for most of my adult life. The frustrating part? I've never been someone who just sat around.
I've traveled the world, stayed active, worked out, and over the past year, committed to Pilates multiple times a week. I've tried diets, calorie counting, meal plans, and all the things we're told we're supposed to do. Sometimes I'd lose weight, only to gain it back. Other times, I'd feel like I was doing everything "right" and the scale barely moved. It was discouraging. As I entered my late 30s and now my 40s, I also noticed my body responding differently. My metabolism wasn't the same, my energy fluctuated more, and despite my efforts, losing weight became even more challenging. Then there was another concern: my health. During routine lab work, I learned my blood sugar levels had entered the pre-diabetic range. That was the wake-up call I needed. My goal was never to be skinny it was to become healthier and reduce my risk of developing Type 2 diabetes and other health complications down the road. After talking with my healthcare provider, I decided to start a GLP-1 medication. It wasn't a decision I made lightly. There are so many opinions surrounding GLP-1s, and I knew people would have something to say. But I also realized something important: no one else lives in my body. No one else sees the work I put in every single day or understands my personal health journey. Since starting my GLP-1, I've learned so much more than how to lose weight. I've learned how to fuel my body with more protein, prioritize hydration, and truly listen to my hunger cues. For the first time in a long time, I wasn't constantly thinking about food. It gave me the space to make intentional choices instead of feeling like I was fighting cravings all day. One of the biggest victories hasn't even been the number on the scale it's been seeing my health improve. My pre-diabetic levels have come down, and knowing I'm moving in a healthier direction means more to me than fitting into a smaller dress size ever could. Has it been easy? Not at all. I've experienced nausea, especially after increasing my dosage. There have been days when food didn't sound appealing, and I've had to remind myself to eat enough protein and vegetables even when I wasn't hungry. I've learned that electrolytes are my friend, hydration is non-negotiable, and giving my body grace is just as important as staying consistent. The medication hasn't done the work for me. I still show up to Pilates. I still choose movement. I still make healthier food choices. I still prioritize sleep and my mental health. A GLP-1 has simply become another tool in my wellness toolbox it hasn't replaced the healthy habits I've worked so hard to build. I also think it's important to say this: everyone's journey is different. GLP-1 medications aren't right for everyone, and they're not a shortcut. They're a medical treatment that should always be discussed with a qualified healthcare provider. What has worked for me may not be the right choice for someone else, and that's okay. As someone who has openly shared my journey through grief, entrepreneurship, and learning to choose myself, this wellness journey feels like another chapter in that story. At 40, I'm no longer chasing perfection. I'm chasing longevity. I want to travel, build my businesses, teach Pilates, and enjoy life for many years to come. Taking care of my health is an investment in that future. If you've been following my progress, thank you for cheering me on and allowing me to be honest about both the victories and the challenges. My hope is that by sharing my experience, someone else feels a little less alone and a little more empowered to have a conversation with their healthcare provider about what wellness could look like for them.
