There is something about June that always makes me reflective. Maybe it's the start of summer, the longer days, or simply realizing that we've reached the halfway point of the year. Six months have already passed, and whether your year has gone exactly as planned or completely off course, this season offers an opportunity to pause, evaluate, and decide what you want the next six months to look like.
As I continue navigating this milestone year of turning 40, I've found myself doing a lot of reflection not just about life, but about entrepreneurship. The truth is, business feels very different today than it did a few years ago. For many entrepreneurs, especially women and minority founders, the landscape has shifted dramatically. For years, much of my work was supported by partnerships, sponsorships, and initiatives that invested in diverse voices and underserved communities. Through Professional Pretty, Herald Beauty, conferences, wellness experiences, media opportunities, and community events, I built platforms designed to create access, connection, and representation. I knew these spaces were needed because I often found myself looking for them. Over the last year, however, I've watched many of those opportunities change. Marketing budgets have tightened, DEI funding has been reduced or eliminated, and partnerships that once felt like natural fits have become harder to secure. Like many entrepreneurs, I've spent more time pitching, negotiating, and trying to create opportunities than ever before. If I'm being honest, there have been moments when I've questioned whether I have the energy to keep pushing forward at the same pace. Not because I don't believe in the work, but because entrepreneurship can become emotionally exhausting when you're constantly building, creating, serving, and showing up while also navigating uncertainty behind the scenes. I know I'm not alone in that feeling. So many entrepreneurs I talk to are carrying the same weight. They're working hard, but they're tired. They're passionate, but they're stretched thin. They aren't necessarily lacking talent, expertise, or impact. They're simply operating in a business environment that looks very different from the one they started in. That's why I've been thinking differently about this halfway point in the year. Instead of looking at June as a reminder of everything I haven't accomplished, I'm choosing to see it as a reset point. A chance to ask better questions. What's actually working in my business? What's no longer serving me? Am I building a business that supports the life I want, or am I constantly sacrificing my well-being in order to keep everything moving? One thing I've learned over the years is that passion can only take you so far. At some point, every entrepreneur needs strategy. We need structure. We need objective guidance that helps us identify blind spots and opportunities we may not be able to see ourselves. That's one reason the work of Tasha Randle and 828 Leadership Group has resonated with me. Tasha works with entrepreneurs and leaders to help them better position their expertise, strengthen their business strategy, and create sustainable growth. What I appreciate most is her focus on helping founders evolve alongside the changing marketplace rather than continuing to rely on strategies that may have worked years ago but aren't producing the same results today. Many entrepreneurs have spent years operating from passion alone. We've worn burnout like a badge of honor. We've overextended ourselves, underpriced our services, and convinced ourselves that working harder was the answer. But sometimes growth doesn't come from doing more. Sometimes it comes from gaining clarity about what needs to change. As we enter the second half of the year, I think that's the real opportunity in front of us. Not to abandon our dreams or give up on our goals, but to reassess our approach. To build smarter. To create businesses that are both impactful and sustainable. If you've been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, or uncertain about your next move, I encourage you to start with Tasha's free audio guide, "Why Sales Feel Harder Than They Should (And 5 Signs Your Value May Be Getting Lost in Translation)." It walks through some of the hidden reasons business growth can feel harder than it should and may help you see where your effort could be getting lost in the process. And if you discover you need deeper support, Tasha also works with founders through her Strategic Advisory Intensive to help them clarify their positioning, communicate their value more effectively, and create sustainable growth. That's more than enough time to make a meaningful shift, create new momentum, and build a business that supports not only your goals, but your well-being too.
